From the shadows of Hugo’s Bar, Lorenzo Marchetti had his cell phone up to his ear as he watched everyone depart, then split up.

“Merda!” he said to the person at the other end. “They’re taking different directions. They’re probably on to us.”

Chapter

Thirty

Once on the street, Marco and Hana went up another nearby set of stairs that led to a bridge taking them to the Bay Street Shopping Complex. From their own starting position, Sabrina and Rebecca turned left in front of the 8-Till-Late convenience store, heading toward Casino Malta. Dominic went directly up Santa Rita Street between Hugo’s Burgers and a taxi stand.

Marchetti was upset, his expected plans disrupted. Still on the phone, he said, “A-Team is still in the Speakeasy and haven’t come out yet. I’m sending B-Team after the girl and the Frenchman. I’ll take the priest. Call A-Team and send them after the two women. Tell them they went toward the casino.”

Walking up Santa Rita—a lurid section of town awash in flashing neon and scantily-clad courtesans beckoning prospective clientele from the doorways of their bawdy establishments—Dominic passed Angels Strip Club. Not far behind him, wearing a black overcoat and felt fedora, Father Marchetti stayed on the phone, relaying details of his observed activity to someone at the other end. He failed to notice the two Swiss Guards following some distance behind him.

As he passed the clubs, Dominic smiled at the sex workers, sympathetic to the plights that often drive people to such employment. As they in turn noticed his white Roman collar, the catcalls grew louder and more inviting, each of them wanting to tempt and defrock the handsome priest, as if he represented some kind of singular achievement. Drawing more attention than he wanted, he picked up his pace.
